(D)os lados da Luz – The side(s) of the Light

O MAAT – Museu de Arte, Arquitectura e Tecnologia, sempre exerceu sobre mim um enorme fascínio pela fluidez, harmonia e maravilhosa beleza das suas linhas.

Aqui não existem arestas nem cantos nem remates. Tudo é suave, convidando à sua observação e, atrevo-me a dizer, contemplação, à medida que o astro-rei nasce e faz o seu caminho diário na esteira do éter, fazendo a mais perfeita justiça à inscrição que está na calçada: “…os lados da luz”.
A nascente é possível ascender aos céus pela escadaria que liga à vasta plataforma no topo do edifício, onde tem lugar um dos mais grandiosos espectáculos da Natureza: o pôr do sol, com uma encenação magnífica e única a cada dia que passa.

Na ligação da cidade ao rio a estrutura convida a que nos sentemos e desfrutemos de um compasso de nós próprios onde o tempo tem um ritmo diferente.

Há quem se sente, há quem se deite nos degraus, quem feche os olhos e se deixe estar. Casais de namorados de ombros encostados um no outro, turistas, curiosos, sessões fotográficas e quem passe a correr, não pela pressa mas por que é o seu momento de ludibriar o tempo que fazemos (es)correr a uma velocidade estonteante e assustadora. Ao contrário das linhas da estrutura.

Se um dos objectivos da aquitectura é o convite dos espaços para que saboreemos o bem-estar proporcionado pelos mesmos, o conjunto composto pelo Maat e a sua envolvente é mais do que generoso em partilhar a sua boa essência.

Para mim, como fotógrafo, o MAAT é um deleite e simultaneamente um desafio na incessante busca e descoberta destas linhas, nas múltiplas manifestações da luz que aqui se expressa, muitas vezes subtilmente, e na construção de novas abordagens imagéticas e narrativas visuais. Aqui espraio a minha visão e deixo que a minha mente viaje para longe das questões mundanas, entregando-me ao que a estrutura, o tempo, o momento e por quem lá passa me oferece observar e apreciar na sua fruição do espaço.

The MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, has always fascinated me greatly due to the fluidity, harmony and wonderful beauty of its lines.

Here there are no edges, corners or finishing touches. Everything is smooth, inviting observation and, dare I say, contemplation, as the sun rises and makes its daily path in the wake of the ether, doing perfect justice to the inscription on the sidewalk: “… the sides of the light”.

From the east, it is possible to ascend to the heavens via the staircase that connects to the vast platform at the top of the building, where one of the most magnificent spectacles of Nature takes place: the sunset, with a magnificent and unique staging every day that passes.

At the connection between the city and the river, the structure invites us to sit and enjoy a beat of ourselves where time has a different rhythm.

There are those who sit, those who lie down on the steps, those who close their eyes and just let themselves be. Couples with their shoulders against each other, tourists, curious onlookers, photo shoots and those who rush past, not because they are in a hurry but because it is their moment to fool the time that we make (es)pass at a dizzying and frightening speed. Contrary to the lines of the structure.

If one of the objectives of architecture is to invite spaces to savour the well-being they provide, the ensemble composed of Maat and its surroundings is more than generous in sharing its good essence.

For me, as a photographer, MAAT is a delight and simultaneously a challenge in the incessant search and discovery of these lines, in the multiple manifestations of light that are expressed here, often subtly, and in the construction of new approaches to imagery and visual narratives. Here I expand my vision and let my mind travel far from worldly matters, surrendering myself to what the structure, time, moment and those who pass by offer me to observe and appreciate in their enjoyment of the space.
